ION recently was granted the acclaimed Boutique Hotel Awards in the sustainability category.
The hotel is located in the countryside close to the Nesjavellir geothermal plant that helps run the hotel on 100% hydroelectric energy. By participating in the green energy project, carried out in collaboration with the local government, allowing electricity to be generated through the cooling of volcanic waters sourced beneath the geothermal parkland on which ION Adventure Hotel is located. The water throughout is then filtered and cleaned before it’s released back into the ground for future use.
Care is given to utilize the abundant energy around the hotel to maintain a sense of balance and respect the nature ION is surrounded by. The ION team has tried cultivating a sense of belonging in nature amongst the travelers that visit the hotel by encouraging them to explore the hiking trails around, use the natural glacial water from taps, and limit the use of unnecessary paper trails.
The ION team has tried imbibing their sustainability practices into the little corners of the hotel such as the recycled rubber tire sinks in the common bathrooms to moss desktop decorations around the hotel. The hotel’s interiors are designed with Icelandic rock and repurposed wood that is locally sourced, which were designed by Santa Monica-based Icelandic studio Minarc.
